Taking the step

"I spent 25 years in travel working for high street multiples, but the fact that I was continually being told what to sell to my customer, rather than actually giving them the holiday that best suited them, really got too much. My branch was out of town and when the company starting changing my hours to suit them I knew enough was enough. I have three children and needed some level of flexibility to my work. I spent six months out of the industry before I decided that I needed to return to the buzz and excitement of travel, and had heard about Travel Counsellors through various colleagues. Obviously making the decision to run your own business is daunting but I knew straight away I had made the right move. I just wish I had done it sooner!"

What to Expect

"I love the life I have now - I have work life balance, I am comfortable financially and I can see the results of what I do. I love the independence and could never return to working for someone else. Ultimately I get out of my business what I put into it and reap the rewards of my hard work. I don't have a typical day and every day is different and exciting, with bookings constantly presenting interesting challenges to keep me learning new things. Support from head office is invaluable and I am always busy taking part in networking, making the most of all the marketing opportunities, and attending conferences and training courses. Life is never dull!"

"I used to be a senior manager for a travel agency and oversaw 2 of its 4 branch offices. Joining Travel Counsellors was never about the money for me whilst I had to work and bring an income in I didn't want to be earning fortunes. However the past 3 years have been very financially rewarding and I have earned money I would never have earned in my previous job."

Donna Waddington, Travel Counsellor

"There are never 2 days the same, one day I can be out visiting customers in their home and discussing holiday plans, next day networking at BNI or Rotary. I can go shopping or meet a friend for lunch when I like. Sometimes I take time out to help with family matters. Most days I deal with enquiries first thing then follow up calls in the afternoon. Ultimately this is my business and I am in control, which is a great feeling."

What Our People Say
back

"I once bought my daughter an elf's costume and arranged for her to hand deliver tickets to a family who'd just booked a Lapland trip. The children believed Santa had sent his own elf to hand deliver the tickets. The clients LOVE it, and it's something the kids never ever forget. Where else could you do that? Magic."

Richard Thompson, Travel Counsellor

"I have been a Travel Counsellor for over 10 years now - nearly the same length I spent on the high street... To be honest, these last 10 years have been far better than I could ever have expected. The support you get from head office and your fellow TC's is above and beyond what I got on the high street. I am a happier and more relaxed person than I was and this is all due to working as a TC."

"From the moment I came to head office for the recruitment day, I was completely sold!"

Deborah Little, Travel Counsellor

"I have found my ideal work life balance, I spend quality time with my family because I'm based at home. I have no commute and I choose my hours. I have the luxury of being able to focus my full attention on enquiries and provide people with great personal service. I attend a couple of networking groups where I meet like-minded business women, sharing ideas and building relationships. I believe people love talking about holidays, and it's the most natural thing to discuss in a social environment - that's when people instantly realise how passionate I am about what I do."

"I love that I am able to take my daughter to school and pick her up every day and no daily commute in rush hour is always a bonus! I work my business around my life, not the other way around. I am in charge of what I do and how I make my business work, with all my effort and time rewarded directly to me in earnings and customer feedback. I love the relationship I have built up with my customers over the years and many have since become friends as well. I am PROUD of my business and what I have achieved."

arrow

Andrea Dalton, Travel Counsellor

"I made my first booking within a couple of days. It was flights only initially to Australia for £2500 but they later added all their land arrangements. I made £300 in my first few days which was about the same as I was earning on a part time basis in a month at Thomas Cook!"
